In 2017, Steve Rotheram became the first Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region. He leads the Combined Authority in its work to drive prosperity, encourage innovation and expand opportunities for local people and communities in every part of the region.

You could feel Steve’s passion and enthusiasm for the Liverpool City Region, and that he wants to make changes that benefit everyone within society. - Stacey, L’Arche Liverpool Community Leader

He invited Chloe, Ben, Rachael, Peter, Stacey and Julia – from L’Arche Liverpool – to join him for a power cuppa at his Merseyside office. They talked about everything from employment and transport to biscuits!

They wanted Steve to hear about the impact of the government’s budget on social care charities like L’Arche, and about why the Liverpool transport network needs to become more accessible. They also told him why it’s important that people working in the emergency services receive training about learning disabilities and autism.

Steve was really welcoming - and really listened. But he also admitted there is a lot of work still to be done. He told us that Merseyrail is now the most accessible network in the country, with level access and lots of space for people in wheelchairs. And that Liverpool is also getting new buses that have more space for wheelchairs and prams to be on board together.

Watch this two-minute video for highlights from their conversation – and to discover why Steve cares about inclusion for autistic people and people with learning disabilities.
