Joining L'Arche is an adventure. We understand you'll have questions before making that next step. If you don't find the answer you're looking for below, feel free to contact us via email at [email protected].

Which Community will I be joining?

Where we can, we will place Live-In Community Workers in a Community of their choice. When you apply you can indicate whether you are happy to be considered for a Community where the need is greater. (We think they’re all amazing!)

How long can I stay for?

L'Arche Communities have preference for candidates who are willing to commit to 12 months in a Community, but we are open to applications from those who are able to commit at least three months. Each Community has a different capacity, so please get in touch if you want to talk this through. If you are joining L'Arche with a Tier 5 Charity Worker Visa or via the Youth Mobility Scheme, this may determine the length of your stay.

What is the allowance?

Sharing your life by living in a L’Arche home is a thrifty way to live, as you won’t need to pay for food, accommodation or bills. We provide a modest allowance as well as the potential for fully paid trips, retreats and holidays.

What will my hours look like?

Schedules vary, but this should be considered a full-time commitment. It’s hard for us to be specific, but it will require both ‘work’ and ‘fun’. Occasionally, you may be even have to get up in the night to lend a hand.

Can I take holiday?

Of course! Live-In Workers can take 28 holiday days in a 12 month period.

Do I need to have experience?

No. Above all, we want applicants who are willing to get stuck in with Community life. We will provide the training you need.

What makes a good Live-In Community Worker?

No previous care experience is necessary. We are looking for people who are friendly, inquisitive, empathetic and engaged by L'Arche's mission.

Do I need to be spiritual?

No. But in L’Arche we believe that every person has a spiritual life to be explored. Around 60% of people who work in L'Arche are Christians, but we welcome people of all religious faiths and none. We just ask you to be curious and open to people who might be different and to how you might grow in your spiritual journey while you are in L'Arche.

How old do I need to be to apply?

Aged 18+

Can I apply if I don't live in the UK?

International applicants are welcome to apply. You may need a visa. You will be shown how to do this in the online application process.

What happens after I’ve applied?

At first we will review your application and if we want to take your application further, we will ask you to send us a CV. Given you are shortlisted, we will invite you to an interview via video call.

I've been shortlisted. When can I expect to hear if my application has been successful?

If you don't get invited for an interview within 6 months, you should assume that your application has been unsuccessful.

Do you offer visa sponsorship?

Yes, tier 5 temporary charity worker visas and tier 2 health care worker visas.

I have a question about the visa application process
