If L’Arche was glitter, I could sprinkle a little bit of L'Arche all around the world - and it would be a much happier place.

by Pat Whitley

Hello, my name is Pat and I’ve been a volunteer with L’Arche Highland for over 6 happy years now. That's me on the accessible bike in the photo above, out cycling with Roisin from our Community.

I have the privilege of working alongside Alice, the garden workshop leader, and core members (people with learning disabilities) Mathew, Lincoln, Craig and Gregor. Together we maintain the beautiful garden and polytunnel held within L’Arche Highland's grounds at Drummond.

You may think this sounds like a big task but I can honestly say that by working as a team we always seem to amaze ourselves with what we can achieve; especially seeing as we always seem to be chatting and laughing - but then maybe this is why we feel that no task is ever too big!

As L’Arche is part of a wider community, I haven’t been limited in just helping out in the garden workshop. I have also helped out at social events, fundraisers and on a one-to-one basis; going out for walks, coffees or even the cinema. I have been truly amazed by what can be achieved by a community when the right support is provided.

I often tell people as a volunteer I get paid in smiles, and I can assure you my face often aches from smiling and my tummy hurts from laughing. I feel so grateful to have so many amazing people in my life. L’Arche really is my happy place.

Fancy volunteering with us?
