Place: You may be required to work at any L’Arche Kent support service, determined by the needs of the community. This may include working within a residential care, supported living or activities setting.

Working Hours: As per contract. Hours will be worked flexibly across the week, including evenings and weekends, and may vary due to the nature of the work for which time off in lieu or overtime may be paid, with the prior agreement of the Team Leader. You are invited to attend Community activities that are not part of your working hours. You are required to provide some sleep-in and waking night duties.

Main purpose of role

  • To support people with learning disabilities in a variety of settings in line with agreed support plans in all aspects of their daily lives.
  • To promote and enable choice, independence, self determination to people with a learning disability through practical, physical and emotional support
  • To contribute to create a sense of community as a place of mutuality and belonging.

Main Duties and Tasks

1. Person Centred Support

  • Providing a high quality of support to the people with learning disabilities in line with L’Arche values, policies and procedures and the requirements of the Care Quality Commission.
  • All support should be in accordance with the agreed person centred Support Plans of the individuals concerned.

2. Support of people with learning disabilities

  • Maximising independence for the people with a learning disability through the provision of appropriate person centred support with personal hygiene, clothing, medical appointments, health needs (including exercise) and medication.
  • Enabling people with learning disabilities to develop new skills whilst being aware of the balance between risk and choice and ensuring that choices are not unreasonably restricted nor risks unnecessarily taken; in line with agreed risk assessments and relevant guidelines.
  • Supporting people with learning disabilities to access their leisure, social, practical and spiritual resources; fostering the development of choice making and decisions.
  • Supporting people with learning disabilities to access education, employment and other activities.
  • Supporting people with learning disabilities to build and maintain family relationships, friendships and to have links with and be included in the local community.
  • To respect and support people with learning disabilities to develop their spiritual life in accordance with their chosen tradition. Supporting people to care for their home and undertake all necessary household tasks such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, paying bills and maintenance.
  • Supporting people to manage their Personal Budget, their benefits, bank accounts and personal budgeting.
  • Supporting people with planning and organization including their diary, travel arrangements and responding to any other support needs which may arise.
  • Acting as Key Worker for at least one person with learning disabilities. This includes taking lead responsibility for coordinating the delivery of all of the above including liaison with all other Support Assistants from L’Arche or elsewhere who are involved in supporting the person. It also involves preparation for their annual review meeting, maintaining the Hospital Passport and Health Action Plan and completing monthly written Key Worker reports of progress against Support Plan.

3. Team and Meetings

  • Working as one of the team and attending and participating in team and locality meetings, person centred planning meetings, reviews and any other meetings requested by the Locality Manager.

4. Administration and Regulation

  • Carrying out delegated responsibilities for tasks such as record keeping, report writing, finance records, medication, First Aid, Fire Safety, rota setting and maintenance reporting.
  • Being responsible for competent, clear communication with professionals, families of people with learning disabilities, neighbours, friends, visitors and other members of L’Arche.
  • Complying with all relevant Health and Safety and Fire Regulations, applicable CQC regulations and L’Arche Kent policies and procedures.

5. Creating Community and Community Membership

  • Building relationships with all members of the community, assisting in celebrations and supporting the spiritual life of the community so that there is an atmosphere of welcome, belonging and inclusion.
  • Assisting with the cleaning of communal areas, shopping, cooking, and welcome of guests / visitors, laundry, maintenance and other household tasks.

6. General

  • Advising the Team Leader and/or Locality Manager on all matters concerning the team and people with learning disabilities utilising the service.
  • Attending formation and training courses as required, with the agreement of the Locality Manager.
  • Performing any other reasonable duties commensurate with the post and the community Mission Plan which may be required from time to time by your Team Leader or Locality Manager.
