L’Arche India reaches out to some of the poorest families with children with learning disabilities, providing practical support such as physiotherapy and vital medications, as well as emotional and social support.

Somnath, who is eight, lives with his mother, Pam Pa, father and sister in Kolkata. The family is supported by L’Arche Kolkata through their outreach programme.

Pam Pa and Somnath attend days out organised by L’Arche Kolkata, where they can meet other families with children with learning disabilities.

‘Now there is a little bit of hope that there are others like us and I know I am not alone,’ Pam Pa said.

As well as the emotional support that families like Pam Pa’s receive through the outreach programme, they also receive practical support. Somnath attends weekly physiotherapy at L’Arche Kolkata, which has helped him to increase his strength and mobility. Before Somnath began physiotherapy, he struggled to stand, but now he can stand and, with an aid, can walk.
