Writing your will is an opportunity to make sure that the people you love most are taken care of, but also your chance to do something exceptional for the charity of your choice.

Gifts in wills make a huge difference to charities but more than 33 million British people don’t have a will in place and it’s estimated that one out of three people die without one. Writing a will early is a good idea—for at least five reasons:

.

1. It will ensure you can help your family.

Quite simply having a will, and keeping it updated, ensures that what you leave behind goes where you want it to go.

2. It avoids unnecessary stress for those you care about.

Making a will ensures the people you love will have one less thing to worry about.

3. It could save you money.

Writing a will can save the cost of going through probate. It can also reduce inheritance tax, which stipulates that if your estate is worth more than £325,000 any excess will be taxed at 40%. By looking at your situation now you may be able to minimise any tax. The full value of any gift to charity is free of tax.

4. An opportunity to support a charity.

You might not be in a position to help a charity right now, but after taking care of family and friends you may be able to support a cause you care about like L’Arche.

5. It will make you feel good!

Knowing you have left nothing to chance (and possibly helped a charity) will make you feel good and reduce your anxieties. It is one of the most important things you can do for the future of your family.
