Create a lasting impact

With a gift to L’Arche in your will – also known as a legacy - you can transform the lives of people with learning disabilities.

In the UK, people with learning disabilities suffer disproportionately from feelings of loneliness and isolation, often without access to employment and coming into contact only with care workers on a daily basis.  Whilst many organisations exist to offer support to people with learning disabilities, few do so with the L’Arche mission of an inclusive community and culture of shared lives between people with and without learning disabilities.

Why we need your help

How legacies have transformed lives so far

David’s House at L’Arche Edinburgh was designed and built to support people with learning disabilities as they age; it was made possible by a legacy, and has since created a cherished home for many people.

L’Arche Manchester’s ‘prayer shed’ provides a space for Community members to reflect on their spiritual lives in peace and calm, as well as hosting events and special evenings. This creative breakout space was kindly funded by a legacy.

Where your money goes

We do understand that your family and loved ones come first, and that your personal circumstances may change over time. If you are able to share a gift, however small, we would be so grateful to receive it. It is thanks to the support from our generous donors that we are able to make a profound and lasting difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities in our Communities.

Julia decided to remember L’Arche in her will after her daughter, who has a learning disability, found independence and a true sense of belonging at L’Arche Preston. Having seen first-hand how unique L’Arche is, and how vital its service is to those it supports, Julia took the step to ensure many more people with learning disabilities will have access to L’Arche in years to come.

How can I leave a gift?

If you have decided to leave a ‘gift in your will’ to L’Arche, there are two options to choose from:

  • A gift of a specified amount (pecuniary gift)
  • A percentage of your estate (residuary gift)

Unrestricted gifts are the most precious as they can be directed where the need is most when they are received which could be many years after you write your will.  Thank you!

Free online wills

We’ve partnered with Guardian Angel to offer our supporters over the age of 18 a free will writing service.  Most people who use this also include a gift to L'Arche.

Residents from England and Wales can either write their wills online, over the phone or with a local solicitor. If you’d like to do this, click the link below.  It will take as little as 15 minutes online or you can call 0800 773 4014 to book an appointment.

Making a will with your solicitor

When writing your will with a solicitor you need to ensure you include our name (L’Arche), registered charity no. 264166. (or SCO38493 for Scotland) and our registered charity address:  L’Arche UK, 10 Briggate, Silsden, Keighley, West Yorkshire BD20 9JT. We can also provide you with a legacy pack, which includes a step-by step guide to plan your visit to your solicitor.

Please contact Melanie Gait on 0161 641 9550 or email [email protected] for advice on how best to support L’Arche with a legacy in your will.

Thank you for thinking of supporting L’Arche in this way.

Summer in the Forest is a full-length feature film about our founder Jean Vanier and the L’Arche communities in Trosly, France and Bethlehem. It tells how two L’Arche communities, though quite different from those in the UK, share our common values, and shows how people with learning disabilities and assistants / care workers that support them are living together.
