Embracing difference

'I think that it is important that L’Arche can pass onto society that there are really great reasons why we would want to live together with people from all backgrounds. It’s not just that we tolerate difference – that’s not enough - not for L’Arche at least.' - Christos, from the L'Arche London Community.

At L’Arche we are dedicated to building inclusive communities in which everybody is treated equally, with kindness and respect.

We value and celebrate diversity. Our Communities model our vision for a world where everybody belongs. L’Arche Communities are multicultural places where people from all over the world bring, reveal and share their gifts. People live together in community, learning from the vast lived experiences and identities of one another. We believe that our societies become rich, inspiring, and fairer places when each person is valued for who they are. As such, we encourage applications from everybody irrespective of religion, faith, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, and age.

We welcome and encourage feedback of all kinds, and want and need to know about discrimination and prejudice. Please submit comments or complaints using the contact us button at the top of this page.

    Summer in the Forest

Summer in the Forest is a full-length feature film about our founder Jean Vanier and the L’Arche communities in Trosly, France and Bethlehem. It tells how two L’Arche communities, though quite different from those in the UK, share our common values, and shows how people with learning disabilities and assistants / care workers that support them are living together.

L’Arche statement following the recent BBC Panorama documentary and the release of the CQC report into the detainment of people with learning disabilities

The Panorama programme aired by the BBC on Wednesday 22nd May showing the abuse of people with learning disabilities, and the recently published CQC report revealing the detainment of people with learning disabilities and autism in ATUs (Assessment and Treatment Units), once again reveals the appalling mistreatment and abuse experienced by some of society’s most vulnerable people.
