You must be 18 or over to apply to be a L’Arche Assistant. You can send us an enquiry by e-mail or phone 0800 917 1337 (this number is free in the UK. Callers from other countries and mobile phone users will be charged for the call). We’ll send you an application pack by e-mail or post. If you live in the UK and would like your pack to be sent by normal post, please tell us this in your message; don’t forget to include your name and address details too! Alternatively, you can approach individual Communities directly about vacancies.
The application pack will include an application form. Completing it is a fantastic chance to really sell yourself. It’s particularly interesting for us to read about any previous experience you have of community of any sort and your reflections on that. It is also great to see someone who stands out as being passionate about something, especially if it relates to people.
Your references are important and we always follow them up carefully. Again we are finding out if you are suited to L'Arche. Are you lazy, late and listless or buzzing, bright and brilliant?
If you are from outside the EU you will have to apply for a visa. If you’re accepted as an Assistant the Assistants Co-ordinator will help you get the visa.
The Assistants Co-ordinator will interview you, possibly over the phone if you live abroad or even better face to face. You will be strongly encouraged to visit a L’Arche Community. When you do, you’ll see if your expectations are realistic. The Community will also get a sense of who you are.
There will be some form filling. Criminal records and your identity will be checked. You’ll need to fulfil any visa requirements. The Community sets this going, and it is an essential part of the process.
It takes time to balance the particular needs of the Community with potential Assistants. So be patient and don't despair if you don't get an immediate yes!
