L'Arche's professional structures

L'Arche professional structures

L'Arche in the UK forms part of an International Federation of Communities. People with learning disabilities and Assistants share life and work together. They live as an intentional Community rather than as clients and staff. The Charter of L’Arche sets out the guiding principles behind L'Arche's philosophy of care. It is inspired by Christian ideals. It says that Community members should be helped in personal growth and development. Relationships and the spiritual dimension are very helpful in this.

L'Arche was incorporated in the UK as a company limited by guarantee on l8 May 1972. Its main aim was to open and run Community homes and workshops for people with learning disabilities. Its aims are defined in its governing document, the Memorandum and Articles of Association. A summary of L'Arche structures is given in the latest Annual Report and Financial Statements.

There are currently nine UK Communities. Two other projects are being developed, in Glasgow. and Manchester. Communities are set up in response to the initiative of a local group. In a typical Community there are a number of houses and work projects. They are close together in a town or city. This means that Community members can be part of the wider neighbourhood. This helps them to develop important links with individuals and groups outside L'Arche.

Every resident is encouraged to achieve his or her desired goals and develop their potentialities. They are supported in many ways. There are frequent reviews that look at them as a person. Care plans respect the different rhythm of each person. We help some members to live more independently. If they are getting older we offer more intensive support in retirement. There are programmes with special facilities for them. Older people can be a source of new life for the whole group.

The Charter of L’Arche

The life of all L’Arche Communities throughout the world is based on The Charter of L’Arche. The Charter sets out our philosophy and beliefs.
