L'Arche and work

Working in the garden

Work for people in L’Arche Communities varies from Community to Community. Some Communities have well-established work projects on site. In L’Arche Kent, for example, there is a flourishing garden project where people learn skills such as sowing seeds and the pricking-out and potting-on of plants. Other craft skills learned are woodwork, weaving, card- and candle-making and mosaics.

Some Communities have therapy projects where a more holistic approach is taken and opportunities such as music therapy, aromatherapy, massage, art, dance and drama can be the whole or part of someone’s weekly programme.

Activities such as sailing, horse riding and swimming are also sought out locally for those who would like to take part.

In L’Arche Liverpool several people with learning disabilities are actively employed part-time outside the Community in the local area. In other Communities members are able to access day opportunities outside L’Arche, giving them a broader experience of life.

Within L’Arche the various work projects aim to be centres for personal development and friendship as well as places of dignity and respect for the individual. What we offer are work experience and activities that enrich people’s lives through the daily relationships.
