In a L’Arche Community there are members who have learning disabilities and members who don’t. They live together in ordinary houses. They are friends with each other and trust each other. They make decisions together. Everyone takes responsibility for what happens in the house. They join in things like shopping and cooking. If they are sad or happy, they share it. They learn to understand what people need. This is not just practical things, but help to cope with life. And they have fun and celebrations, too! Some of our members with learning disabilities had been in institutions for years. Others join us as young adults from their families. All of them have a real home where they are loved and valued.
