About L’Arche Haiti
For over 30 years L’Arche has been active in Haiti providing homes, community and other support to people with learning disabilities.L’Arche Haiti started in 1976 in the suburb of Port-au-Prince in Carrefour where the epicentre of the earthquake was on January 12, this year.
We have two communities in Haiti. The largest is in Port au Prince. Fifteen people with disabilities, a number of whom had been abandoned, live in the community. Another fifteen come from their families to L’Arche each day. We also run a school for 20 children. Another 20 people with disabilities have made our second L’Arche community in Haiti, Chantal, their home and family. This community was in the process of building a woodworking shop and a new programme that will combine banana harvesting with a composting project. Community homes and workshops have all been wrecked.
L’Arche is not a large aid organisation. We are small but this means that we are very responsive. L'Arche personnel from Canada have gone out to Haiti to assist along with a team of people from the Dominican Church from neighbouring Dominican Republic.
Let us stand with and support the people of Haiti at this most difficult time.
