About L'Arche Brecon
We have one house in L'Arche Brecon, home to three local people with learning disabilities and four assistants. Our members with learning disabilities are at the heart of the community. They are welcomed, valued and supported in real, warm relationships. In an atmosphere where we all live, work and pray together, individuals are enabled to grow, to develop their strengths, gifts and interests and to lead a fulfilled life. Everyone is valued and loved for themselves; their choices and needs form the framework for day-to-day living.
L'Arche Brecon is very much part of the local community. We are within walking distance of the town centre and make full use of the local leisure and social facilities (it's also an excellent base for exploring the wonderful Welsh coast and country). We visit and entertain family and friends, and have close contact with local churches. St David's, Llanfaes, is a close neighbour which some members choose to attend.
We have close links with social services and the local authority, which delegates the care of members to us. Members have a wide choice of day activities in the community, including college, day centre and supported jobs. Everyone is involved in the normal, daily household activities of shopping, cooking, cleaning, planning and prayer. Highlights of each year are an Easter pilgrimage, individual and group holidays, celebration of birthdays and Christmas, and prayer evenings and Eucharists held in the house. Personal and rest time is built into the busy and varied lives everyone leads.
A management committee of local people is closely involved with the community, as is an active group of friends, and we have a small office in the centre of Brecon. Would-be assistants, core members or volunteers are always encouraged to get in touch!
